Summer Time- A Fine Time For Your Health!

Summer time is here and living in the climate we do, it seems much to short! I find myself trying to spend as much of the day outside as I can.  So do most of my clients-
This time of year, all that activity can take it's toll on our physical health.
I've seen a number of people recently that have pain or discomfort brought on by all these fun outdoor activities! A little to much weed whacking, a afternoon of digging in the garden, overdoing the exercise, a day on the boat bouncing around on waves, a long drive through the wine country, lugging coolers and grills and kids to the family get together,  an evening standing and dancing on the Clinton Square concrete, a vacation that includes hauling luggage, sleeping in a strange bed and hours of sightseeing on foot!
Chiropractic adjustment re balance the body, decrease pain and discomfort and give you more mobility and flexibility.
Want to feel great so you can enjoy the summer more? Chiropractic can help you.

What Are You Choosing to Eat?

I was just at the grocery store- the person in line in front of me had two bags of chocolate candy, two huge packages of cookies, lots of white bread and processed meats. The person behind me had 4 huge ( what are they now several liters?) sodas, and two six packs of soda, bags of chips and baked goods. They each had a few salad items. I looked at my organic avocados, healthy bread, 4 kinds of fruit, yogurt, nuts and granola and thought- It's not that hard to eat healthy- wish more people would!  look at your basket before you check out- what are you choosing to eat? Would it make a difference in your health if you choose healthy foods? You Bet It Would!

Medical Inc.

Here's a link to the trailer for the upcoming movie "Medical Inc."
I'm a fan of the movie already, and I haven't seen it yet. How could I be a fan? Because the Chiropractic community has had some advance education on the movie, and we are behind it all the way. Viewing this movie may change people's lives for the better. They may become healthier from learning about the way the medical community works. There are countless wonderful MD's, Nurses and other health care professionals who may not be fully aware of how big pharma and insurance companies make decisions about what drugs to allow on to the market and why. Most health care professionals could also learn from this movie. Bottom line, we should all be working together for the benefit of our patients.

What you should know about your food

Healthy Eating is something that will pay off over time. Isn't it time you considered changing your diet? a healthy diet of clean, organic foods is good for your body and good for the planet. If you are still eating animal products, begin to eliminate them one at a time- consider "vegetarian days" several times a week as you adapt to less animal products. Over time you will feel better and look better too!

The Weather is Fine- Time to Get Moving!

Well we made it through another winter, and most of us did so with a lot less exercise than we get during the summer. Let's face it, it's just not fun to be outside when it's 20 degrees! Now however, spring has come and I hope that you have already considered, and plotted, and started to exicute a plan of action to get back in shape.

Walk, Jog, Run, Bike. Play ball, hike, dig in your garden. Doesn't really matter what you decide to do- what matters is that you do it.

Remeber to hydrate- drink lots of water, and protect your pale northeast winter skin from the sun. Get your tan a little bit at a time. Enjoy the freedom of being outside with out coats, boots and mittens.

Don't forget your regular chiropractic check up- keep your spine in line, and you will feel fine!

You Are What You Eat

I watched the movie "Food Matters"- it was really interesting and informative. I would highly recommend this movie to :
  • anyone who is unhealthy and would like to change that
  • anyone who is healthy but would like to become more so
  • anyone who wonders what foods are best for your body
  • anyone who wonders why Americans are so sick and why we spend so much on medical care in this country.

Food Matters talks about the way we view "illness care", and how food choices change your health, as well as natural care for chronic illness. Here is the link:

Chiropractic Research 2011- the results are in...

If we want to contain national health care costs, we must educate people about the benefits of
chiropractic care, and make it a bigger part of the US health care solution. I
encourage you to share this with your Workplace Wellness Department or HR, also
anyone you know that does not know the benefits of chiropractic care!

Summary of research on Chiropractic 2011- form an article in Decembers Dynamic Chiropractic News paper- I’ve condensed the studies into short, readable bits.
Here are just a few samples of the types of research done in
the past year and the outcomes:

COST EFFECTIVNESS
RAND corporation studied geriatric population-specifically comparing
the health of those who did regular maintenance chiropractic adjustments to
those who did not- they found that 95.7% of those under care were free from the
use of nursing homes vs 80.8 % of those not under care;
73.9% of chiropractic users were Free from hospitalizations
for the past 23 years vs 52.4% of the non- chiropractic group;
75% of the chiropractic users were “more likely to report a better health status, more likely to
exercise vigorously and more likely to be mobile in the community “ vs Less
than half of the non- chiropractic users.

Another study involving the elderly population compared
direct expenditures ( hospital care, physicians services, nursing home use)
between groups of patients under chiropractic maintenance care and those who
were not. Nearly a threefold savings of average expenditures was reported as
follows: $3,105 for patients under chiropractic maintenance care vs $10,041 for
patients receiving no chiropractic maintenance care.

INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY
A study looked at the savings when onsite chiropractic care
was offered in an industrial setting. Care was available 2 times per week and
included early detection, treatment and occupational management of muscle and- spine/other joint injuries. For the 21 months the program was studied, the total number of days lost, cost per claim, rate premiums and especially the number of surgeries decreased dramatically.
Cost savings from the avoided surgeries alone amounted to $900,000 dollars.

REDUCED INJURIES
A study involving 59 players from Australian Rugby Foot ball
teams. The study compared those who used the standard medical care for sports
injuries and those who included regular chiropractic care along with the
standard medical treatment. The players who used chiropractic started with a
minimum of one adjustment per week for 6 weeks and went to one adjustment every
two weeks thereafter.
The chiropractic group was found to have fewer injuries to
the knees, hips and legs and less time lost from play. Incidentally, they also
reported less back pain.

FUNCTIONAL IMPROVEMENT
In this study, chronic low back pain patients were split
into two groups. Both groups received 3 adjustments a week for a month. Then,
one group continued with adjustments once every three weeks for an additional 9
months. The group continuing with maintenance care continued to improve over
the full 10 month period. The group that stopped care after a month reverted
back to pre adjustment pain and disability levels by the end of the 10 month period.

LOWER DISABILITY RECURRENCE
Workers Compensation data collected in Illinois, Maryland
Massachusetts, New York, Texas and Wisconsin involving 894 cases revealed lower
disability recurrence for patients under chiropractic care compared to those
receiving physical therapy or medical care.
Physical therapy treated patients had twice as many recurrences as those
under chiropractic care, and medically treated patients had 45% more
recurrences than those under chiropractic care.

Still TakingTylenol ?

Taking just a little to much Tylenol each time can be deadly.
The above headline comes from a November 23, 2011 article on the Healthland section of
the TIME website. This is just one of many articles which include headlines
like, "Popular painkiller can be deadly even in small overdoses"
(CBSNews), "Sneaky Killer: Just a Little Too Much Tylenol Can Be
Deadly" (Fox News), and "Too much acetaminophen over time may damage
liver", (USA Today).

The articles are based on a study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology in
the November 22, 2011 edition. The USA Today article starts off with an ominous
warning, "Taking slightly too much of the pain reliever acetaminophen
(best known by the brand name Tylenol) over time can lead to an overdose that
can cause liver failure and death."

Dr. KennethSimpson, an author of the study explained in the USA Today article that taking
just a little more than the recommended dosage over time can cause serious
liver failure and death. He explained further in the Journal's press release,
"They haven't taken the sort of single-moment, one-off massive overdoses
taken by people who try to commit suicide, but over time the damage builds up,
and the effect can be fatal." The term that the researchers used to
describe this kind of repeated mini-overdosing was "staggered overdoses."

The study looked at 663 patients who had been hospitalized at the Royal Infirmary of
Edinburgh between 1992 and 2008 with injuries caused by acetaminophen. Of these
patients it was determined that 161 of them had staggered overdoses from,
according to researchers, taking the drug for things like headache, toothache,
muscular pains, and abdominal pains. Dr. Simpson explained the real danger
these people were facing by reporting, "On admission, these staggered
overdose patients were more likely to have liver and brain problems, require
kidney dialysis or help with breathing and were at a greater risk of dying than
people who had taken single overdoses."

The article in TIME reports that "Acetaminophen is one of the most commonly used drugs
in the world, with 28 billion doses purchased in the U.S. in 2005 alone."
They go on to explain that because it is such a common drug, being the main
ingredient in Tylenol, that people might think that it is safe. However, they
note, "Tylenol overdose is the leading cause of acute liver failure in the
U.S., leading to 26,000 hospitalizations and nearly 500 deaths annually,
according to the Food and Drug Administration."

If you know anyone who still relies on Tylenol for pain relief you can help them by suggesting they try chiropractic! After all, it worked for you!

Good winter health starts now.

The temperatures dropping, so are the leaves. With the time change we go home in the dark. Taking a hint from nature and preparing for the cold weather to come is the smart thing to do.

In terms of your good health, preparing for winter means looking at your diet and cutting out things that reduce immune function, like sugar. Studies show that just one bowl of sugary cereal can reduce your white blood cell count dramatically. White blood cells are the guardians of your immune system, attacking foreign bacteria and viruses.

Remember to hydrate- drink lots of water. You may not feel as thirsty as you did in the heat of the summer, but the use of the furnace, wood stove or other heating methods means the air is dryer, and your body is too.

Dress for the weather. Layer your clothing so you can remove a layer if you become too warm. Wear boots, mittens and a hat.

Get enough rest. The six or seven hours of sleep you get in the summer may not be enough in the winter. Now is a good time to start adding a few extra minutes of sleep each night, working up to an extra hour for the winter months. Your immune system can’t possibly work well if it is tried, so give yourself more rest.

Exercise is important for your immune system, and in this climate, more challenging to get in the winter. Now is a good time to start a winter exercise routine. You can join a yoga or zumba class, go to a gym, invest in some exercise equipment for your home, or find some exercise DVD’s that you like and start using them. Just 20 minutes a day can make a big difference in how your immune system works, and how you feel when you step on the weight scale.

Tune up your immune system with a winter vitamin program. Vitamin C, vitamin D and a good whole food multiple are winter essentials.

Tune up your immune system with essential oils. Rain Drop Therapy, an oils application to stimulate the immune system and rid the body of bacteria and viruses, is the best prevention that I know of. I believe Camille will be offering a special on this one hour relaxing oils application treatment. Give her a call to schedule, 315-247-7874.

Stock up on the things you might need in case you start to feel sick. My first aid kit includes High potency garlic, Oxygen tablets, Echinacea, Young Livings Thieves oil, Peppermint oil, and RC, a blend for lung function. At the first sign of a cold or other illness I take all of the above. All of these are available at the office, so stock up now, don’t wait until you really feel sick.

Office Specials

While supplies last I have vitamin D 1000, Super Garlic 1000, and vitamin C 1000 in a package, all 3 for 35.00.

I am also offering Liquid Life Joint Care at whole sale pricing, while supplies last. This supplement is an excellent value, and a very effective supplement. WHY take a joint supplement? I take one every day to lubricate my joints, and repair any joint damage I may have from my activities. If you are an athlete, if you have arthritis or degenerative joint disease, if you have achy joints, then this is for you. OR- if you are like me, and just want to be as healthy as possible as long as possible, this is also for you.

Frog genes in Tomatoes?

We encourage you to find out what genetically modified food is, and once you do you may want to avoid eating foods that have animal genes spliced into them.
Here is a link to a post on how to identify genetically modified foods at the store. OH, and in case you haven't heard, Germany is the first county to ban genetically modified foods- we wait to see if other countries will follow.

What Kids Need

Hi Everyone,
I'm currently running a special just for kids- free consultation and exam- through the middle of June.
Please encourage your family members and friends to take advantage of this opportunity to have their children checked for spinal subluxations.

As most of you know I have worked with a large number of children through my 18 years in practice. Most of the kids I see have a health challenge that has not been successfully addressed by the medical approach. Many of them are on drugs, given by MD's, which are making them sicker, or are not working at all.

I'm not sure why parents think of chiropractic ( the largest drugless healing profession in the world) as a last resort, but many parents do. If chiropractic was the first thing they tried, their children would not be taking those awful drugs!

All the parent has to do is call and make an appointment for their child before June 15th. 315-635-2739

Now- here's an example of kids and chiropractic.

I saw a 8 year old boy who was taking medications for asthma, and used an inhaler daily. His parents were concerned about the effect of all the meds.
I did chiropractic adjustments to his spine to increase the flow of nerve energy to his lungs, and to increase his immune system function. I also had this child do a easy 10 week detox, as often allergies and asthma are caused by a toxic reaction to drugs the child was given as an infant. In this case the child had been given steroids as an infant because he had thrush at birth.

In three months time this child had stopped using his inhaler and was off the meds. He was able to play baseball, something he had always wanted to do. His asthma never returned. That was 15 years ago. He went on to be a athlete, and a minor star in extreme skateboarding.

This child was my guest on a health talk TV show that I did in Albuquerque, and he told the audience that it was easy, painless and fun to work with a Chiropractor.

This is just one example, there are many more.

The nervous system controls and coordinates all the functions of the body. If the spine is out of alignment, the nerve energy can not flow freely, and your body will not function to it's true potential.
All parents want their children to reach their true potential. Chiropractic care can help.

Please pass this on to anyone you know who has kids!

Excellent article from today's Huffington Post.
Today's Food System: All Drugged Up
Laurie David, 03.02.2011
Producer/Author/NRDC Trustee

The next time you're feeling sick, think twice before going to your doctor for answers. Look down at your plate, instead.

Hidden in your hamburger or smoked ham may be something you didn't want or expect on the menu -- antibiotic-resistant superbugs. Instead of protecting you from infectious diseases, antibiotics might simply be making you sick.

Just last month, the FDA confirmed that 80 percent of all antibiotics used in the U.S. go to animal agriculture. No joke, 80 percent! This is true insanity and scientists fear that this extreme overuse of antibiotics is putting our children, elderly and families at serious risk.

When antibiotics are used (as they have been since the 1940s), they kill off all targeted bacteria, except for those that by chance have a favorable mutation. These survivors go on to multiply, producing a drug resistant army of bacteria. It's evolution at its finest.

The bottom line? The more we use antibiotics, the more resistant strains develop. In many cases, these can infect humans, leading to prolonged illness or even death because the standard treatment no longer works. People stay sick longer, spreading resistant bacteria to others, all while putting a huge strain on our medical system.

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council the scientific consensus is that non-therapeutic use of antibiotics in livestock animals is a serious threat to public health. Yet, the vast majority (the previously mentioned astounding 80 percent) of antibiotics used in the U.S. is used on livestock animals, much of it on animals that are not sick. In fact, the FDA has recognized, since at least 1977 that the use of some antibiotics (and 80 percent is a heck of a lot more than "some") for non-therapeutic uses in livestock animals poses a risk to human health because of the rise of antibacterial resistance. They have acknowledged themselves the danger so its not much of a stretch to demand the FDA move quickly to withdraw the use of these antibiotics for livestock animals who aren't sick. If the FDA does not act quickly, as it should, then Congress should move ahead with legislation to ban such uses (Congresswoman Louise Slaughter from NY is introducing a bill she first submitted in 2009. Email her your support, the link below will take you to her web page.)

http://www.louise.house.gov

It's just common sense: antibiotics should be protected, used only when necessary and in the most effective manner as determined by medical professionals.

But that's not what's happening. In our corporate-controlled food system, factory farmers routinely feed antibiotics to their cattle, pigs, chickens and other animals. Sometimes these antibiotics are meant to cure illnesses but often they are used to spur growth and weight gain in their animals, fattening them up for our growing American appetites. Meatless Mondays, anyone?

And even when antibiotics are needed to actually cure infections in livestock, these illnesses are anything but natural -- caused instead by horrible conditions, in which animals are crowded into filthy, confined spaces, spreading disease at alarming rates, all to keep up with growing American appetites.

As has been reported, every year more than 90 thousand Americans die from bacterial infections that have developed a resistance to antibiotics. That's number exceeds the death toll from AIDS, car accidents and prostate cancer combined. In many cases, these deaths might have been prevented if only the appropriate antibiotic still worked.

It's shameful and repulsive that so much of our scientific genius goes into producing drugs for our livestock -- allowing big factory farming operations to keep animals in vile conditions, forced to gain weight at excessive and unnatural rates.

The reckless use of these drugs puts the lives of our children in danger. When rushed to the hospital, patients deserve to be given the most effective medicines, not told that the best drugs were already used up on ill-treated livestock.

There's something seriously wrong with a food system that requires 80 percent of the country's antibiotics just to maintain itself. This food isn't healthy, and it's making -- and keeping -- us sick.

I encourage you to continue to look for ways to feed your family with out using meat, fish and birds. The harm to your immune system and the harm to the environment from meat based diets is huge. Add to that the suffering of countless animals who end up in the food mill and you have some pretty good reasons to go vegan or vegetarian. Just start with one or two days a week, meat free. Then add another day, and another. You will be amazed at how good you feel when you reduce the animal foods in your diet.

The Days are getting Longer

But lets be honest, we still have a ways to go to be out of the snow. Case in point- today's forecast for the next couple of days.

This is a good time to take your vitamins, dress in layers and do yoga or some other indoor exercise. Exercise increases your immune system and decreases depression, which is so common in the north country in the winter.

Personally, I'm seeing and feeling the light at the end of the tunnel, as I swear I smelled a tiny bit of spring early in the morning just a few days ago!

Special for February: Sign up with Young Living using sponsor and enroller #28314 during February, and place your first order in February and You will receive a free 3.85 ounce V6 Mixing Oil, the vegetable oil complex recommended for mixing pure essential oils. The Science of Subluxation: Chiropractic moves forward with new research.

I found this article fascinating. Just when you think you know everything, new research emerges. New advances in Chiropractic research help us to better understand how a simple adjustment can so profoundly effect a persons health.

New Nerve System Transmission Found. New Subluxation Mechanism?
A new system of nerve transmission was discovered recently that could have a profound impact on chiropractic, and offer another mechanism for subluxation. The research was published in the October 5, 2010 issue of the American Association for the Advancement of Science journal, "Science Signaling".

Previous to this research most scientists thought that nerve cells only sent messages across a junction known as a synapse. This new research shows that nerve cells are communicating with other cells by twitching, without using a synapse. Chief researcher, Doug Fields from the National Institutes of Health asked the question, "How could you have signaling from neurons to cells that are not neurons when our understanding of how signaling works is all based on synapses? That's the mystery."

Fields' research was able to show that the nerves twitched when stimulated and this twitching opens a channel in the cell membrane and a chemical called ATP escapes. When released, ATP acts as a neurotransmitter and therefore allows nerves to communicate without having to go through a synapse.

The implications for chiropractic could be profound. This potentially demonstrates another mechanism of nerve transmission that could be interfered with and thus be another model of subluxation. It could be theorized that nerve irritation may alter the twitching of the nerve, therefore altering the ATP release and interfering with this newly discovered nerve transmission process. The research also mentions that the spinal cord itself also twitches when stimulated, so the possibilities for subluxation models are profound.

In spite of the impact this research could have for chiropractic, only one news article covered this research. This single article appeared in print and on the radio on October 5, 2010 from National Public Radio. The article tried to say that the health impacts of this research might affect epilepsy and pain. The NPR article has embedded video showing both the twitching of nerves and the evidence of the release of ATP.

The abstract of this research can be seen here: http://stke.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/sigtrans;3/142/ra73

Moving into Winter

We are moving into the winter season with the reduction of daylight, the frosty mornings and the dryness of the heated air we now must use to stay warm. You may have noticed the holiday decorations already popping up in the stores!

Take it all in stride this year by following a few simple suggestions to make the winter easier:

Take your vitamins! Especially important in the winter to keep you healthy and reduce the effects of the lack of sunlight. If you would like specific suggestions for which supplements would be best for you, please ask me.

Stock up on things that help you stay healthy- I make sure I have Thieves Blend, RC, Ginger, Peppermint, Citrus Fresh, and a Rain Drop Therapy kit in the house before winter comes. These Young Living Therapeutic grade oils are worth their weight in gold!

Get your rest. Don't let the holidays run you to the ground. Keep to a normal sleep schedule. Make time for a day off here and there, spend time at home, with those you love.

Keep your appointments for adjustments and massage, don't let the holiday rush stop you from doing the things that really help you stay healthy. Several people have already mentioned concern about holiday expenses and keeping up with their care. Remember what really matters this holiday season- your health!
