Good winter health starts now.

The temperatures dropping, so are the leaves. With the time change we go home in the dark. Taking a hint from nature and preparing for the cold weather to come is the smart thing to do.

In terms of your good health, preparing for winter means looking at your diet and cutting out things that reduce immune function, like sugar. Studies show that just one bowl of sugary cereal can reduce your white blood cell count dramatically. White blood cells are the guardians of your immune system, attacking foreign bacteria and viruses.

Remember to hydrate- drink lots of water. You may not feel as thirsty as you did in the heat of the summer, but the use of the furnace, wood stove or other heating methods means the air is dryer, and your body is too.

Dress for the weather. Layer your clothing so you can remove a layer if you become too warm. Wear boots, mittens and a hat.

Get enough rest. The six or seven hours of sleep you get in the summer may not be enough in the winter. Now is a good time to start adding a few extra minutes of sleep each night, working up to an extra hour for the winter months. Your immune system can’t possibly work well if it is tried, so give yourself more rest.

Exercise is important for your immune system, and in this climate, more challenging to get in the winter. Now is a good time to start a winter exercise routine. You can join a yoga or zumba class, go to a gym, invest in some exercise equipment for your home, or find some exercise DVD’s that you like and start using them. Just 20 minutes a day can make a big difference in how your immune system works, and how you feel when you step on the weight scale.

Tune up your immune system with a winter vitamin program. Vitamin C, vitamin D and a good whole food multiple are winter essentials.

Tune up your immune system with essential oils. Rain Drop Therapy, an oils application to stimulate the immune system and rid the body of bacteria and viruses, is the best prevention that I know of. I believe Camille will be offering a special on this one hour relaxing oils application treatment. Give her a call to schedule, 315-247-7874.

At the first sign of a cold or other illness I take all of the above. All of these are available at the office, so stock up now, don’t wait until you really feel sick.

I take one every day to lubricate my joints, and repair any joint damage I may have from my activities. If you are an athlete, if you have arthritis or degenerative joint disease, if you have achy joints, then this is for you. OR- if you are like me, and just want to be as healthy as possible as long as possible, this is also for you.
