Maintaining Your Bodies Healing Ability, Naturally

What is chiropractic? Chiropractic is the science, art, and philosophy of the effects of the vertebral subluxation complex on the health of the body. Chiropractic is based in physical science; there is an art to the actual delivery of the chiropractic treatment, called an adjustment; and there is an underlying philosophy about health that is unique to chiropractic.
As a chiropractor, I believe the body is a self-healing organism designed to be in a state of perfect homeostasis, or balance. I believe that when the body is in balance, all systems function at 100% of the system’s potential, and the body is healthy. When the body is not in balance, when systems function at less than 100% of their potential, then health is lost and disease takes over.
According to Gray’s Anatomy, the nervous system controls and coordinates all of the functions in the body. Chiropractic is based on this fact. We recognize that a nerve must transmit a message from the brain to the organ, tissue, or cell in the body so that the organ, tissue, or cell knows how to function in a healthy manner. If this transmission of messages is disrupted, health is disrupted.
Chiropractic recognizes the relationship between a healthy spine and a healthy nervous system. Because of the position of the peripheral nerves, which exit the spinal cord through openings between the spinal bones, the health of the spine can affect the health of the nervous system. In a spine that has the vertebral subluxation complex, there will be a lack of proper function, causing interference with the nerves that can and will affect the body’s ability to transmit messages through the nerves. When nerve transmission is disrupted or lost, organs malfunction, muscles weaken, symptoms of disease and decay occur.
As a chiropractor, my job is to make sure that your body is free of subluxations, and free of nervous-system malfunctions that can cause pain and disease.
Many people seek chiropractic care to be free from the pain of headaches, backaches, and other musculoskeletal problems without the use of drugs or surgery. Many patients, when freed from spinal subluxations, also report an increase in overall health and vitality, as well as a lessening of symptoms of conditions that are not musculoskeletal, such as asthma, allergies, and earaches.
Can you imagine what a change it would be to be without pain, without suffering, without drugs? Chiropractic care is suitable for anyone who has spinal subluxations and
would like to be free from them. Chiropractic is appropriate for anyone of any age, from the youngest baby to the most elderly person who wants to change their health. Chiropractic is very safe, very effective, and cost-effective.
How does one become subluxated? There are many ways, from birth trauma and falls as a child, to auto accidents, sports injuries, or accidents around the house. Subluxations can be caused by years of poor posture, or from stress. Think about it—do you remember any falls from your childhood? Most of us have at least one story of a childhood injury to relate. Maybe you fell down the stairs, off a bike, out of a tree, or off the monkey bars. Many patients I see recall injuries from high school sports.
Most of us have experienced a fender-bender or two, if not some more serious vehicle accident. (It’s hard to total a car without doing some kind of damage to your body. Just because nothing was broken doesn’t mean nothing was hurt.) Maybe you became subluxated when you moved or picked up something heavy, and now, every once in a while, your back “goes out on you.” A back that “goes out” now and then is almost a sure sign of subluxation.
If, years later, you can remember a fall, injury, or accident, it probably hurt, and it probably seriously jolted your body. You are probably subluxated. You may wonder why
you don’t feel subluxated. Here are some clues as to what being subluxated feels like: Are you stiff in the morning or after working? Do you notice a general lack of flexibility in your body? Rather than just easily turning your head, do you have to turn your shoulders to look behind you when you put the car in reverse? Do you have headaches? (Many patients who are subluxated report an initial symptom of headaches.)
Does your body feel as if it’s getting old? Do you have numbness or tingling in your hands or feet? Perhaps you thought it was a lack of blood flow, your hands or feet going to sleep. This can be a very common sign of spinal subluxations. Do you have leg pain that has been diagnosed as sciatica? Sciatica is another common sign of spinal subluxation.
These are some of the more common symptoms that can point to spinal subluxations. If you have one or more or all of these, then you may also have some other health problems. You probably aren’t as healthy as you’d like to be, and you probably don’t do all the things you’d like to do. Some patients attribute the above symptoms to “just getting older.” You don’t have to accept the outdated mode of thinking that says that you lose your health as you age. If your doctor has ever attributed your health problems to the fact that you’re getting older, I recommend that you change doctors.
So now you may have a better idea of what chiropractic is, and how you might feel if you’re subluxated. Now what do you do about it? First, call a chiropractor and make an appointment. Don’t worry, all chiropractors are very well educated and must pass rigorous national and state requirements to practice.
Licensing requirements weed out those that are truly not qualified to practice. The rest is up to you. Any time you choose a doctor, you should look at their ability to communicate with you as a priority, as well as their ability to listen. Ask questions and see how they respond. If the doctor’s office is professionally run and you’re comfortable with the doctor, then you’re probably in the right place. Most insurance covers some chiropractic, so check out the doctors on your plan. Remember, insurance policies cover a certain number of visits per year for each policyholder. But the number of visits you may require might differ from the number of visits your insurance company will cover. This is very common.
Most patients receive a complete examination, including x-rays. Chiropractors are well trained to palpate the body—that is, to make muscle and bone diagnoses by touching the body—but nothing gives the full picture like a picture. I know the cost of x-rays is a concern for many patients, but what is your health worth? Another common concern is x-ray exposure. I definitely think you should keep your x-ray exposure to a minimum.
Talk to your doctor about the minimum required to get the maximum information. A picture of your bones could save your life if you happen to have pain because of a serious disease process that has yet to be seen.
After the exam and the x-rays, the doctor will tell you what type of treatment is appropriate for your condition. When you get adjusted, you lie on a table fully clothed, and the doctor literally moves your bones by pushing them in specific directions with a specific amount of force. Don’t try this at home; adjustments are safe only when done by a well-trained, highly skilled professional. After the adjustment, which takes only a few minutes, you can get right up and go on about your life; in most cases, no recovery time is needed.
You’ve probably heard stories about people who went to a chiropractor and felt worse after the adjustment then they did before. That happened to me—after injuring my neck in an automobile accident, I found that, for a few weeks after the accident, my regular adjustment appointments left me sore. Had I not been a chiropractor and not understood why that was happening, I might not have gone back.
Yes, sometimes people do feel more sore after their first few adjustments. But notice that I say after their first few adjustments—not after every adjustment. In the beginning of the process, there is often a small inflammation reaction in the adjusted joints. That means they’re going to be sore. This doesn’t happen in every case—in fact, it doesn’t happen in most cases—but when it does, it’s just a part of the healing process. After a few adjustments, the discomfort should go away for the most part, and future treatments should be painless.
Usually, a series of spinal adjustments is needed to correct subluxations. Although a single adjustment might relieve the pain, it won’t permanently cure the problem—repeated adjustments are necessary to get rid of the subluxation. Each adjustment builds on the previous one retraining the muscles to support the vertebrae in their “new,” restored, healthy positions, which they may not have held in years. Most patients continue with some sort of preventive care, to maintain their health and to prevent subluxations from becoming reestablished in their spines.
Most people find that an adjustment once a month keeps them healthy, and counters the effects of the stressful, active lifestyles most of us live. If you want to be healthy throughout your lifetime, chiropractic adjustments are a necessity.

Chiropractic Research 2011- the results are in...

If we want to contain national health care costs, we must educate people about the benefits of
chiropractic care, and make it a bigger part of the US health care solution. I
encourage you to share this with your Workplace Wellness Department or HR, also
anyone you know that does not know the benefits of chiropractic care!

Summary of research on Chiropractic 2011- form an article in Decembers Dynamic Chiropractic News paper- I’ve condensed the studies into short, readable bits.
Here are just a few samples of the types of research done in
the past year and the outcomes:

COST EFFECTIVNESS
RAND corporation studied geriatric population-specifically comparing
the health of those who did regular maintenance chiropractic adjustments to
those who did not- they found that 95.7% of those under care were free from the
use of nursing homes vs 80.8 % of those not under care;
73.9% of chiropractic users were Free from hospitalizations
for the past 23 years vs 52.4% of the non- chiropractic group;
75% of the chiropractic users were “more likely to report a better health status, more likely to
exercise vigorously and more likely to be mobile in the community “ vs Less
than half of the non- chiropractic users.

Another study involving the elderly population compared
direct expenditures ( hospital care, physicians services, nursing home use)
between groups of patients under chiropractic maintenance care and those who
were not. Nearly a threefold savings of average expenditures was reported as
follows: $3,105 for patients under chiropractic maintenance care vs $10,041 for
patients receiving no chiropractic maintenance care.

INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY
A study looked at the savings when onsite chiropractic care
was offered in an industrial setting. Care was available 2 times per week and
included early detection, treatment and occupational management of muscle and- spine/other joint injuries. For the 21 months the program was studied, the total number of days lost, cost per claim, rate premiums and especially the number of surgeries decreased dramatically.
Cost savings from the avoided surgeries alone amounted to $900,000 dollars.

REDUCED INJURIES
A study involving 59 players from Australian Rugby Foot ball
teams. The study compared those who used the standard medical care for sports
injuries and those who included regular chiropractic care along with the
standard medical treatment. The players who used chiropractic started with a
minimum of one adjustment per week for 6 weeks and went to one adjustment every
two weeks thereafter.
The chiropractic group was found to have fewer injuries to
the knees, hips and legs and less time lost from play. Incidentally, they also
reported less back pain.

FUNCTIONAL IMPROVEMENT
In this study, chronic low back pain patients were split
into two groups. Both groups received 3 adjustments a week for a month. Then,
one group continued with adjustments once every three weeks for an additional 9
months. The group continuing with maintenance care continued to improve over
the full 10 month period. The group that stopped care after a month reverted
back to pre adjustment pain and disability levels by the end of the 10 month period.

LOWER DISABILITY RECURRENCE
Workers Compensation data collected in Illinois, Maryland
Massachusetts, New York, Texas and Wisconsin involving 894 cases revealed lower
disability recurrence for patients under chiropractic care compared to those
receiving physical therapy or medical care.
Physical therapy treated patients had twice as many recurrences as those
under chiropractic care, and medically treated patients had 45% more
recurrences than those under chiropractic care.

What Kids Need

Hi Everyone,
I'm currently running a special just for kids- free consultation and exam- through the middle of June.
Please encourage your family members and friends to take advantage of this opportunity to have their children checked for spinal subluxations.

As most of you know I have worked with a large number of children through my 18 years in practice. Most of the kids I see have a health challenge that has not been successfully addressed by the medical approach. Many of them are on drugs, given by MD's, which are making them sicker, or are not working at all.

I'm not sure why parents think of chiropractic ( the largest drugless healing profession in the world) as a last resort, but many parents do. If chiropractic was the first thing they tried, their children would not be taking those awful drugs!

All the parent has to do is call and make an appointment for their child before June 15th. 315-635-2739

Now- here's an example of kids and chiropractic.

I saw a 8 year old boy who was taking medications for asthma, and used an inhaler daily. His parents were concerned about the effect of all the meds.
I did chiropractic adjustments to his spine to increase the flow of nerve energy to his lungs, and to increase his immune system function. I also had this child do a easy 10 week detox, as often allergies and asthma are caused by a toxic reaction to drugs the child was given as an infant. In this case the child had been given steroids as an infant because he had thrush at birth.

In three months time this child had stopped using his inhaler and was off the meds. He was able to play baseball, something he had always wanted to do. His asthma never returned. That was 15 years ago. He went on to be a athlete, and a minor star in extreme skateboarding.

This child was my guest on a health talk TV show that I did in Albuquerque, and he told the audience that it was easy, painless and fun to work with a Chiropractor.

This is just one example, there are many more.

The nervous system controls and coordinates all the functions of the body. If the spine is out of alignment, the nerve energy can not flow freely, and your body will not function to it's true potential.
All parents want their children to reach their true potential. Chiropractic care can help.

Please pass this on to anyone you know who has kids!

Chiropractors Come Out On Top in Consumer Report Study

First Up – In The News- Chiropractors Come Out On Top in Consumer Report Study

In April 2009 Consumer Reports released the results of a patient survey study, that will be published in their May 2009 paper edition, showing that chiropractic rated highest among patients in satisfaction of relief of back pain. Results of the study were reported on in several news articles including an April 6, 2009 WebMD article and an April 8, 2009 CBS news story.

The survey noted that 80% of US adults report having back pain some time in their lives. Of those responding to the survey, chiropractic received the highest grade with 59% saying that they were "highly satisfied" with their results. Physical therapy and acupuncture rated second and third with 55% and 53% respectively. In comparison, satisfaction with medical specialist and primary care medical physicians rated only 44% and 34% respectively.

CBS News medical expert Dr. Jennifer Ashton commented that the results of this study reflect what she is seeing in her practice. She noted that back pain is the most common ailment in the country and it is difficult to treat. Dr. Ashton stated that her patients are looking elsewhere, "They're staying away from things like medication, prescription drugs and surgery." Dr. Ashton also warned against a "quick fix" to get rid of the pain. She noted, "A lot of times that's prescription narcotics, which is actually probably the worst thing for you." She also warned, "Surgery is another option, but one that should be used as a last resort."

Dr. John Maltby, President of the International Chiropractors Association added, "For well over 100 years, chiropractors have been seeing a large number of patients suffering with back problems. And although chiropractic does not directly treat the pain, we do work to correct the underlying structural and neurological problem that, in many cases, is causing the problem. This study shows what we have known for a long time. Chiropractic get results and helps people lead normal and healthier lives."

In The News--Cost Effective Care: The Evidence Mounts
Only weeks after the release of a Wellmark Pilot study that suggest chiropractic care can reduce both costs and the need for surgery, Milliman USA has released finding from “An Actuarial Analysis on the Impact of Chiropractic Care on the cost of Medical Care for Patients with common Spinal Diagnosis”, a previously confidential report that adds to the mounting evidence linking utilization of chiropractic services with significant cost savings. The bottom line? It was found that spinal patients who seek chiropractic care have materially lower health care costs than those who use other types of care.

Happenings-- Dr. Joan will be contributing an article on Staying Healthy the Natural Way During Flu Season to an issue of The Baldwinsville Messenger. The article in its original form is included in this newsletter for your information and enjoyment. The Messenger, with limited space, asked for the article to be edited to less than 500 words, so a short version will appear in a future issue.

The Baldwinsville Library will host a class on Staying Healthy the Natural Way During Flu Season on November 19th with Dr. Joan as the speaker.

Dr. Joan will be teaching a class on Seasonal Effective Disorder- How to Beat The Winter Blues, as part of St. Joe’s Hospital School of Nursing monthly lunch and learn programs on November 16th. She is also on the schedule for two more classes after the first of the year, including one on Reiki- seems the nurses are really asking a lot of questions about this energy healing method.

Now- How to stay healthy naturally this winter-

Your Immune system, when functioning properly, can ward off bacterial and viral infections. Start making changes now that will support your immune system in the coming cold and flu season.
Your immune system effectiveness is reduced when it is “spread to thin”. Decreasing the number of things it has to deal with, frees the immune system up to focus more resources on bacterial and viral invaders.

1. Decrease your sugar intake. Studies show that sugar reduces the ability of your immune system to fight invaders effectively. Reduce the number of sweets your family eats, and plan healthy substitutes for holiday sugary treats.

2. Reduce toxins in your environment. Over the counter drugs can reduce your immune systems ability to fight. Use natural remedies for everyday allergies, aches, pains, headaches and upset stomachs. Also, if you have not “gone green”, now would be a good time. Chemical cleaners used in the home can place a strain on the immune system. Use all natural cleaners instead.

3. Reduce stress. Easy said, right? Everyone is under stress, and for each person the things that cause stress are different. Take a look at the things in your life that stress you out. Is there some way you can reduce these stressors during flu season? Maybe your life is to hectic, can you schedule a little “down time” each day, or every few days to rest and relax? Maybe the holidays really stress you out. Can you make some choices now to pass on holiday activities that seem to be more trouble than they are worth?

The next step to a healthier immune system is to increase the things that help it function.

4. Get enough rest. This may be the most important thing you can do on a regular basis to increase immune function. Take out your calendar now and plan regular rest time for you and your family. Pencil it in just like you would any other important activity and then stick to your plan.

5. Eat Healthy. Get plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and pass on the sweets and junk food. Take an all natural vitamin supplement every day. If you aren’t sure what to take, consult with a natural health care provider.

6. Get a massage. Not only does massage relax you, (see # 3) and give you a much needed break from stress, it also is restful for your body ( see #4). However, more importantly, studies show that massage has physical benefits way beyond relaxation. Massage increases immune function, increases blood and lymph circulation, stimulates the release of endorphins, lowers blood pressure and reduces heart rate, while it increases lung function.

7. Partner with a natural health care provider. Especially if you feel your immune system is already weak, if you suffer from allergies, asthma, chronic disease or you are sick a lot, your immune system is already weak. Don’t wait until you get sicker to seek help. Natural health care providers, such as chiropractors, can assist you in strengthening your immune system. Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to increase immune function. Chiropractors are experts in assisting people like you to find better health.

Does your child or someone you know have scoliosis?

It is school physical time again and one of the most terrifying things a parent can hear is that their child has scoliosis.

Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine that can, if it gets bad enough, affect the lungs and heart and cause serious health problems for your child.

Typically, after diagnosis the child is referred to a pediatric orthopedist for evaluation. With scoliosis under 25 degrees (the curve is measured by degrees) the parents will be told to “wait and see how bad it gets” before care is recommended. With scoliosis of 25 to 40 degrees, a hard brace is used to try and slow the curve growth. A scoliosis above 40 degrees is referred for spinal surgery.

In 1993 I attended the International Scoliosis Foundation to become certified in scoliosis correction. Since 1993 I have worked with numerous parents and children to correct scoliosis without the use of braces or surgery. Following specific protocols, I use chiropractic adjustments, massage, and exercises - and, if necessary heel lifts to gently and naturally correct the curvature of the spine. In many cases I have been able to achieve 100% correction. I have worked with cases from 12 degrees to 50 degrees, as well as young adults who had surgery and rod placement before the natural approach was an accepted alternative. I have also worked with adults whose scoliosis was not addressed when they were children. In the case of adults 100% correction is rare; however, even a 50 % correction can greatly relieve the discomfort associated with untreated scoliosis.

The Scoliosis Care Foundation was created in 2001 to educate the public on early detection and conservative treatment for scoliosis, with an emphasis on avoiding surgery. The Foundation recommends chiropractic adjustments and rehabilitation rather than waiting for serious progression and surgical intervention.

If your child, or a child you know has been diagnosed with scoliosis, you can call my office at (315) 635-2739 to schedule a no cost consultation and evaluation for your child, and learn more about the natural, safe and very effective correction techniques I employ.
If you are an adult with untreated scoliosis, the same offer applies.

Research Shows Chiropractic Can Help Infants with Colic and Reflux

Recent research reporting on infants with colic and acid reflux reveals that chiropractic may play an important role in helping resolve these conditions.

Atlanta, GA, May 22, 2009
The research on 16 infants, reported in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health – Chiropractic, revealed that ten of the infants experienced a difficult birth that may have resulted in spinal injuries predisposing the children to these problems.

“Research is revealing that injuries to the upper part of the neck may be a factor in a number of disorders. These injuries lead to misalignments in the neck that may compress the spinal cord and other nerve structures in the neck. This compression leads to nerve interference and can result in a host of disorders such as colic and acid reflux” stated Dr. Erin Elster the author of the study.

Dr. Elster previously studied the relationship between upper neck injuries and such disorders as Parkinsons, multiple sclerosis, asthma, headaches and Tourette’s in clinical studies. Reviews of the scientific research reveal numerous other studies that have shown a similar connection.

“It makes a lot of sense when you think about it” stated Dr.=2 0Matthew McCoy a chiropractor, public health researcher and editor of the journal that published the study, “If you damage or compress the neurological structures in the neck this can have far reaching implications on the functioning of the body. Through research like Dr. Elster’s we are finding that correcting the misalignments associated with these injuries reduces the nerve compression and people improve. In this study it was infants suffering from colic and acid reflux.”

Ordinarily infants suffering from colic and acid reflux may be given medications that in many cases have not been fully studied in children. Finding the cause of the colic or reflux is a much better strategy. One such cause is thought to be spinal misalignments, termed vertebral subluxations by chiropractors, which result in structural and neurological interference to the spine and nerve system. It is this interference that may cause symptoms such as those seen in this study and chiropractors correct or reduce this interference.

In the study, sixteen infants with colic or acid reflux were evaluated and cared for using protocols developed to correct upper neck subluxations. Histories of birth trauma were reported in 10 cases; upper cervical subluxations were found in all 16 cases; and 100% of the cases responded to chiropractic care with symptoms completely resolved. According to Dr. Elster, these results suggest a link between birth trauma, upper cervical injury, and the onset of colic and acid reflux. Correcting the injury to the upper cervical spine through the use of specific chiropractic adjustments appears to eliminate colic and acid reflux. The author calls for further study in a controlled environment with larger sample sizes.

Montel Williams adjustment video circulating on the net

This past week one of my new patients found the Montel Williams video on line. The one where he is talking about his chiropractic adjustment, specifically his Atlas adjustment. Montel had pain, and balance problems before being adjusted.

I think this clip is wonderful, as it introduces people to the fact that chiropractic can help them, that the atlas adjustment is so important and everyone trusts Montel!

The thing I don't like about this video is the fact that they only show the atlas adjustment using an instrument. Folks, it can be done by hand as well, and has been since 1895.

The atlas adjustment was the original chiropractic adjustment and, if a chiropractor uses hands on adjusting, the results are just as good. That is-if a chiropractor adjusts atlas, which, unfortunately, is rare these days. Many chiropractors today overlook this important adjustment, or do not know how to adjust the atlas specifically.

I have been taking x-rays that show specifically the atlas misalignment, and adjusting atlas with a toggle recoil adjustment for 20 years. I have had excellent results with this adjustment.

Oh, and that instrument they showed on the video? It was an experiment in development at Life University when I was a student doctor. We all had to be adjusted with it so they could keep statistics on how well it worked. Personally, I liked the toggle recoil adjustment better.

If you look at our posts for April, you will see another clip about atlas adjusting, this one tell how it helps lower blood pressure.

Atlas Adjustment Lowers Blood Pressure

On March 25, 2008 the ABC morning show, "Good Morning America" aired a segment with Robin Roberts showing how chiropractic helps high blood pressure. The video later appeared on the popular publishing site YouTube.

This news story covers the medical research on the C1, or first cervical vertebra adjustment, also known as the atlas toggle, and it's effects on blood pressure.

Yes, this is one of the adjustments I do, and they are correct, not a lot of Chiropractors do this adjustment anymore. Click on this link to watch it, then send it to everyone you know with high blood pressure.
